2011 Founders Day Festival
Tyrone Founders Day started in 1977, as a result of the Governor’s Project Competition Program. The competition challenged similar sized towns, all over Georgia, to motivate their citizens to become involved in an activity that would bring the town together. The Tyrone Committee met the challenge with a festival that would be called Tyrone Founders Day.
The first celebration included a street dance, teen contest, arts and crafts displays, citizen of the year award, and a competition to design the Tyrone Town Flag. The estimated attendance of the first Founders Day was approximately 1000 people. We are proud to say that in 2005, our attendance was estimated at 15,000 people.
Tyrone is a residential community of approximately 6,300, located in Fayette County, about 25 miles south of Atlanta, Georgia. The land in the area originally belonged to the Creek Indians and was settled by Irish farmers in the late 1800's. Some of the homes built by those first settlers are still occupied by their descendants. The people who built the railroad here in 1907 reportedly named Tyrone. It was incorporated on August 18, 1911. The Scotch and Irish immigrants thought the topography reminded them of the area around County Tyrone in Ireland.
This year we are celebrating the 35th Founders Day. The Festival will be held at Handley Park. This includes the carnival, vendors, entertainment and fireworks. The car show will be at Shamrock Park. The parade will begin at 11:00am and proceed along Senoia Road from Arrowood Drive to Handley Road, where it will disband.

Arm bands go on sale September 1- 14, 2010 at the Tyrone Recreation Center
Monday thru Thursday 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Friday 8:00 AM – 2:00 PM
Return completed application and money (cash only) to Tyrone Recreation by September 14, 2010.
Offer is void after this date.
The Carnival will hold 1 session on Friday, September 17th, 6PM-10PM, 2 sessions on Saturday, September 18th, 12:00PM – 5:00PM or 6PM-11PM,
and one session on Sunday, September 19th, 1PM – 6PM

If you would like to purchase Pre-Sale Arm Bands for the carnival you will save $5 off of the Arm Bracelet.
Ride Bracelet is $20 on the days of the festival. There is a $1 gate fee. This money is donated to the Tyrone Youth Baseball Association.
All the money raised by the carnival and festival is put back into Founder’s Day to help pay for the Tyrone Police Dept., awards for the contests, rental of the tent, the DJ, dance floor, the bands, advertising and other expenses that come along with preparing for such a popular event.
