The State of Georgia’s Environmental Protection Division (EPD) has deemed the Town of Tyrone a Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS-4) because we are considered to be urbanized. Therefore, Tyrone must maintain our National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit each year by submitting an annual report to the EPD. Throughout this report, the Town must prove that we are making great efforts to minimize polluting discharges into lakes, streams, and other bodies of water.
The following are required categories of the report, which must be satisfied by implementing various Best Management Practices (BMPs):
As part of a 16-county area, Tyrone must also comply with the Metropolitan North Georgia Water Planning District (MNGWPD) requirements for watershed management. An audit is conducted once every five years by the EPD to ensure the Town is fulfilling these requirements, most of which mirror that of the MS-4 report. The Town uses the Georgia Stormwater Management Manual as a guide to implement the State and the District requirements.
