In December 2009, the Mayor and Council voted to change the names of two Town streets for safety purposes and honored the late Chief Roger Spencer while they were at it.
The name change affects two portions of Swanson Road on the west side of Highway 74. The first is the only remaining dirt portion of Swanson Rd. that runs from Palmetto Rd to its dead end near the Southampton Subdivision, which was changed to Palmetto Court. The second change affects the newly paved portion of the road running from its intersection with Palmetto Rd to the stop sign adjacent to the Publix Shopping center. This portion of the roadway was renamed to Spencer Lane.
These changes were necessary in order to reduce the possibility of confusion when first responders are dispatched to the area and went into effect February 1, 2010.
Roger Spencer served as the Town's Police Chief from 1985 until his passing in 2003.
